It appeared to be a night of slip-ups, decisive ones went against Alan and Matt, While Abdulla dug deep to turn a game back to his advantage. Charles’ game was one of two halves, (no football pun intended), after a strong initial attack, a slight slip left Joe looking as if he would win. However, Charles stuck in there for the draw.

Alan had an aggressive start and got his knight into a strong position, however a combination of Patrick consolidating his position and Alan not managing to press his positional advantage left Alan's queen in danger of being trapped. At some point this led to Alan going a piece down and the end was inevitable. Abdulla had a poor opening leading to Vicky having a very strong attacking position, this led to a capture of one of Abdulla's knights for free and Vicky continued to press her advantage to the end. Both sides castled early on and there was a frantic struggle on the queen's side leading Chris to go an exchange of a knight for a rook up. However Chris couldn't press home the advantage only seeing minor exchange possibilities with would not have been decisive and perhaps disadvantageous. The end result was a book draw. Ivor managed to get a pawn advantage early on in the game against Jane. A slow paced game ensued in which Ivor never lost the advantage which finally told in the form of a converted pawn.

I didn't see Alan's game, Board 2 - Abdulla - Mike got a passed pawn, and Abdulla had to sacrifice a knight to kill it off. his left Mike in a strong position, however Abdulla managed to retrieve the position, gain the bishop up, and end up with a pawn and rook vs Mike's last rook. It still looked like a drawn game, however some cunning playmanship by Abdulla meant that the pawn was queened. Dennis had a strong early position, both Greg and Dennis had their rook lined up, however the game didn't look to be going anywhere and a draw ensued. On board 4 Charles went for an adventurous capture of the pawn on the queen rook file after swapping off queens. However, this weakened his position , and instead of pressing on the attack he sat back too much and a slow draw game was dragged out.

Alan had a mishap early on, but still had a strong attacking position, however Tom's piece advantage slowly broke through. A drawn game in Abdulla's part - a possibility of a forced 3 repetitive move was missed. Charles' had an early break with a strong attack, Chris hung on and it ended up coming down to the last reamining (passed) pawn. Thelma had a strong position in a board full of pawns and a single rook left each. Thelma's tactic of clearing the board of strong pieces had worked and a draw resulted

Alan had a close game on board one, and although he appeared to have the advantage over Matt by two pawns, the remaining bishops on opposing colours meant the a draw resulted. Charlie made a tactical error castling queenside instead of king-side that led to too strong an attack, and Dave had a long drawn out game which Greg finally battled into a stronger winning position. Zac started with a strong Queen's gambit, declined by Charles, however although he continued a gradual breakdown on the queenside, the slow pace of the game allowed Charles to open a devastating attack on the kingside that was decisive.
