Strong wins on boards 3 & 4 by Abdulla Mufti and Dale Stevenson ensured
at least a draw. A tough match by Dennis Miller who was unfortunate
not to convert the draw into a win ensured the victory. A late slip
up by Charles Richmond meant a loss to a steady game by Adam Harvey
on board 1.

On board one dennis castled queen side and start an attack on
Stephen's King-sided castled king, Stephen responded with a slightly
stronger attack on the queen side. both sides had to hold their
nerve, one bad move and it could have swung either way. The position
ended with Dennis having two rooks, and stephen a king, a drawn
position was guarenteed if these were swapped off with the remaining
2 pawns each. On board two Abdulla torn into Haether's queen-side
early on, but some stout defending meant that Abudulla's queeen side
pawns were equally obliterated, but Heather ended with a slightly
stronger pawn structure. A slight slip under pressure from a steady
game by heather meant abdulla lost his rook, and the game followed
to its obvious conclusion despite strong defensive play by abdulla.
On board 3 there was a cadgey start, by Paul had a vanguard of pawn
pushing forward in the centre. Eugene managed to get a strong
position, but the pressure by Paul led to a slip up by eugene losing
his queen to a knight. A strong steady continuance of pressure by
paul meant bit by bit Paul over came Eugene's defense. On board four
early attacks by dale left him looking strong, however these petered
out and Lee looked stronger positionally. However there were no
obvious breakthroughs on either side. A last swap off included a
neat trick by the knight swapping off for a rook messed up Lee's
remaining pawns at the end, and dale's stronger pawn structure in
the end game meant he got a queen.

Charles R started with a high tempo opening,
however lost it fairly quickly to a solid Charles S opening, it
remained fairly even, however Charles S managed to get another tempo
going towards the end of the game and Charles R missed a couple of
opportunities to square the match.
Abdulla played a solid game and pinned a rook
with a bishop fairly early on, the pressure took its toll on Yvonne
and Abdulla had a relatively straightforward end game.
Charles R could have taken a lesson or two out
of Eugene's opening which was a variation of a Evans Gambit which
worked a dream, although George came back a bit the strong position
from the opening meant that Eugene was left with a fairly easy game.
Dale kept his 100% record with a comfortable
game on board 4.

Charles withstood a pressurised position to emerge with a stronger
position than mark. however, unable to see a finish and aware of the
vunerability of his king agreed a draw. A couple of early mistakes
ment that Tong cruised his game against Ivor. A similar story
occurred the other way around ensuring abulla a win.
On board 4 towards the end Eugene managed to recapture the pawn
he was down. However although in a dominant position her played too
safely to leave David in a dominant position at the end. A mistake
on the clock meant 2 minutes being given to David with less than a
minute left each otherwise, Eugene resigned at this point.

A stronger than normal Bury F team managed to inflict our biggest
loss of the season pushing us down to the lower part of mid table.
We have a our two toughest matches upcoming against Linton and
Stowmarket. Kevin forced an Indian defence on Bob Jones, who is known to
enjoy the opening. Charles made heavy weather of a hyper accelerated
Dragon. Eugene lost some pawns at the start and then lost to two
strong passed pawns. Dale who was under the weather made a mistake
and went down to his first defeat of the season.
We have a welcome break for a few weeks from the league with
rapidplay and roger Goldsmith matches coming up.

An attacking start on board one by Stephen, was absorbed by Charles,
although there was a time advantage to Charles, a draw was agreed in
the middle game.
Abdulla made a mistake early on which led to a rapid demise.
Eugene appeared to be on the back foot., with Vicky having an
extra passed pawn, forcing the loss of a bishop. However some dogged
play and the creation of his own passed pawn, meant the recapture of
Vicy's bishop and Eugene a pawn up. However, with time pressure
meaning there wasn't too much time to analyse a draw was agreed.
Dale and Jane came to a theoretical drawn game with lots of pawns
going nowhere, two rooks each and opposite coloured bishops. However
Dale played on looking for a break which he almost got on the
kingside, but theory won - a drawn game!

With Bury fielding a
weakened boards 3 & 4 from the earlier match in
Newmarket earlier in the season, but a strengthened board 2.
Newmarket took advantage of boards 3 & 4 - Eugene out playing
his opponent while Dale went for a war of attrition. Charles
mamanged to reverse his earlier result against Adam, while Abdulla
lost by the narrowest of margins.

Unfortunately this loss meant Cambridge have completed the double on
us, and leaves it doubtful for us to challenge for 2nd place in the
league without other results going our way.
On board 1 Charles had an aggressive opening pushing up on the
queenside, and stopped Alvin from castling. A counter attack was
rebuffed, unfortunately a checkmate was missed by Charles and a draw
ensued.
Abdulla withstood an aggressive opening that opened up his
kingside. However he went an exchange down, that despite an
overwhelming time advantage against Heather ultimately led to his
demise.
Eugene had a poor opening which lost a piece, despite hanging in
there allowed no come back.
Dale went an exchange up early on, and although Lee managed to
come back on the major pieces it was to the expense of 3 pawns,
which Dale ensured counted.
This leaves Dale in line for player of the season for our
division at this stage with over 78% wins (5.5 / 7 games).

On board 1 Bob, did his usual attack on the French Defence,
Charles went wrong early on and Bob pressed his advantage. Dennis
missed a couple of opportunities on board 2, and solid play by Dave
ensured a victory. On board 3 things got complicated in the centre,
but good play by Zac ensured another Bury win.
On board 4 Eugene built up an overwhelming attack that swept
Richard aside. Thanks to the F side who played with such panache
over both legs sweeping us aside.

Eugene played a strong queenside attack, but lost a pawn in the
process that ment towards the end, although it it almost a drawn game
Dave managed to use the pawn advantage.
Rob lost a piece to a powerful line up of pieces in a middle of the
board standoff, and never really recovered
Alan tore into Richard's kingside, it took longer than it looked
like it would at an earlier stage - basically a knight / bishop on the
king in the corner forcing the exchange of a rook for the knight.
Charles managed to open up Alan's kingside early on, kelp the
pressure on, but Alan did his usual shutting up of shop. a
theoretically draw at the end - with each having a pawn about to queen
and blocked pawns on the h file.

An excellent performance was put in by our team outgraded in points
by about 581 to 463.
Alan had a slav exchange at the start, that lead onto a more
mundane game than Paul wasn't looking for. An isolated pawn on Paul's
part with all the major pieces on either side aimed at finally fell.
However, Alan was unable to capitalise and later lost his pawn
advantage - a draw was eventually agreed.
Charles hung in against the strong position Mark had, with kings
castled on the king's side and very open queensides. An advantage on
time at the end with the threat of a counterattack never far away
meant that Mark never got the chance to seal the victory.
A strong opening by Eugene couple with a slightly weak one by Simon
left lots of pressure on the F6 pawn and an uncastled king. Although
Eugene found himself a knight up, Simon used all his experience
advantage to draw level and eventually agree a draw.
A strong game by John and a couple of tactical errors on Rob's part
left John with an overwhelming attacking advantage that he took
advantage of.
